Science Is Starting to Catch Up to Naturopathic Wisdome

we are finally learning what Aunt Lillie already knew

03.22.2013

My hearty and hale 92 year-old Aunt Lillie remains the healthful life of the party. In fact, a few weeks ago, she led the sing along for my parents’ 55th anniversary. When I was a kid, I remember her telling us to eat our broccoli and eat plenty of fish. She also warned us to stay away from margarine - she made it a point to say: ‘as long as I’m alive, only BUTTER will be eaten in this house!”

As a kid, I did like fish, but never really gravitated towards green vegetables. I also had no problem slathering margarine all over a piece of Wonder bread.

Today, as a naturopathic physician, I realize it was not only just Aunt Lillie who appreciated the benefits of healthy foods at a time when it was not very fashionable. During my childhood and adolescent years (of the 60’s through the 1980’s), while I was eating at Burger King anytime I had the chance, there was a subculture of ‘health fanatic’ naturopathic physicians who believed that whole and organic food were vitally important to health. They were also persecuted for telling people not to take wonder drugs, for the body can heal with natural means. People like Dr. John Bastyr (for whom my naturopathic medical school Bastyr University in Seattle is named after) held this thoughtful space and carried natural medicine, virtually by themselves, until the rest of society could catch up....

FLU: Natural Remedies That Work

reprint from 2009 blog

1 - Observe the recommendations to WASH HANDS thoroughly. Use warm water.

2 - DO NOT TOUCH FACE and NOSE to avoid spreading virus to your mouth, eyes or respiratory system.

3 - Take your FISH OIL – fish oil is known to balance an over-inflammed immune system, and may be helpful to lower the overall cytokine cascade. Cod liver oil may be the best choice for it has extra D and A. Vitamin A helps protect respiratory passages and is anti-viral itself.

4 - VITAMIN D, VITAMIN C, ZINC – may be useful. According to Johnathan Wright MD, vitamin C and D may be a more potent anti-viral choice than even medications. Zinc is an anti-viral mineral that has inhibited viral replication in research.

5 - STRESS REDUCTION helps to lower our stress hormones and balance our immune function to help properly deal with any virus.

6 - Get plenty of SLEEP – sleep is another important immune balancer which has been shown, when 7 hour or more, to help fight virus by 300% over people who do not get 7hours of sleep

7 - AVOID SUGAR – which can lower your immunity and allow easier catching of any virus.

8 - Consider regular NASAL WASHES – if the virus is typically transmitted into the upper respiratory tract, clearing that area may help lower the load that enters our system.

9 - AVOID INFLAMMATORY FOODS – foods like milk and dairy, wheat for some people, and any food you know you are sensitive too. Excess inflammation in your body may contribute to more of an inflammatory cascade than is healthy.

10 - EAT ANTI VIRAL FOODS: garlic, onions, berries, green tea.

11 - There are a few ANTI-VIRAL HERBS worth considering. Licorice, PauD’Arco and Lemon Balm. These have a history of being helpful with flu and colds. There is no research using these in this swine flu period in place of conventional medications and we are not suggesting forgoing conventional medicines.

12 - EXERCISE – helps move your lymph tissue and blood in your body, which is needed to keep your immune surveillance at its best.

From a naturopathic perspective, we may need to address the underlying causes of these viral illnesses.

IQ Air

Filter Your Air for best health

1-16-2011

Information about the IQ Air Filter, the filter drs. Pina and Peter use in their own home and clinic to protect against the myriad of harmful chemicals we breathe in on a daily basis. Also excellent for anyone with asthma and seasonal allergies.

The particles we breathe in can get into our blood faster and easier than foods we eat or even the water we drink. Up to 15% of lung cancers occur in non-smokers (such as Christopher's Reeve's wife). We all need extra protection from our dirty air.

Anyone interested true health should have the cleanest air possible. Although we cannot change the outside air (without political action) we CAN at least change the air in our living space. Drs. Pina and Peter highly recommend at least one air filter for your bedroom, and for the bedrooms of the kids too. IQ Air is the best available, and what we recommend for our patients and ourselves.

Diabetic Patient Integrates Naturopathic and Conventional Medicine for Better Results

An Real-estate investor came into my Manhattan office with a history of Type II diabetes diagnosed over one year prior. His medical doctor placed him on one medication called glucophage, which did control the blood sugar. Naturopathic Medicine: A New York State of Mind
published in New York Naturally Spring Summer 2005

In my Staten Island hometown, I was not exposed to natural medicine while growing up. In fact, well into my early adulthood, my medical beliefs remained very conventional. As an aspiring medical school student in my early twenties, I even decided to do research at the National Institutes of Health – the hub of conventional medical thinking. At the time, I had a friend who unexpectedly began to develop chronic health problems. She found herself leaning to one side when she walked and having difficulty with her eyesight. Within two months after these symptoms surfaced, Jillian was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

Headaches, Natural Treatments for
published in the New York Association of Naturopathic Physicians newsletter, March 2005

Headaches come in many shapes and sizes. Some people never get headaches while others endure chronic pain that does not allow them to function at work, sleep, eat or lead a normal life. According to the American Council for Headache Education, at least 90 percent of men and 95 percent of women have experienced at least one headache. Although painkillers such as aspirin, ibuprofen and ergotamine can give relief, they often cannot be taken long-term due to serious side effects on the body.

Depression, Complementary and Alternative Medicine for
as seen in the upcoming Chapter of the psychiatric textbook The Biology of Depression

As the mainstream medical world is confronted with the dramatic increases in the utilization of complementary and alternative medicine CAM therapies, much is unknown regarding how to adequately consider these alternative treatments. There is little scientific justification to support the use of the vast array of alternative options, but these treatments are readily available to the public and CAM professionals. The public has been choosing to use dietary supplements, which has driven the increased utilization of CAM treatments in the past decade. This chapter discusses CAM treatments for major depression, but the primary focus is on dietary supplements. It is important to discuss how CAM clinicians ascertain that alternative treatment modalities are appropriate and then ascertain factors symptoms in depressive illness that are most relevant when choosing from a myriad of treatment options available. It is important to mention that a substantial portion of the public has been utilizing dietary supplements without consulting CAM or non-CAM clinicians.

Naturopathic Medicine and Acupuncture
Brian Carter"s Pulse of Oriental Medecine

The term naturopathy refers to the idea of nature cure, which uses the healing power of nature in an effort to allow the patient to cure their own illness by stimulating the body"s vital force, or qi. The tenets of naturopathy hail from a number of healing traditions, including Ayurveda, European eclectic medicines, the Greeks, and the Chinese Taoist tradition. Although a few naturopathic colleges were functional at the beginning of the 20th century, subsequent monopolization by the conventional medical profession led to legislation that severely restricted use of other health care systems. However, in the last 30 years, public awareness of natural modalities, combined with a genuine discontent for the current healthcare system in the United States has led to a resurgence of naturopathic medicine.
