Mammograms Baseline Age Raised to 50 yrs.
In a change of standard of therapy care, according to the US Preventive Services task force, it is likely that mammograms earlier are doing more harm than good. Like prostate testing in the elderly, studies show that overall, more problems are being caused by over-testing. Some women at higher risk may still benefit from earlier testing.

Vitamin D and Heart Health Linked
Looking at tens of thousands of healthy adults, it was shown a majority were deficient in vitamin D. Those with extremely low levels were almost twice as likely to have died or suffered a stroke, or have more coronary disease and heart failure than those with adequate amounts.

Study Shows New Yorkers Are  Neurotic and Unhealthy

rope to breakNatural Medicines Can Help
by Dr. Pina and Dr. Peter

Almost half of New York residents say they are in less than very good health, according to a national study. "At every education level and in every racial or ethnic group, adults in New York are not as healthy as they could be," the study concluded. New Yorkers rank 31st out of 50 states.

The study suggested that stress and anxiety may be a major factor in the low health. Many New Yorkers spend more energy and time trying to balance their finances by working more, and spending less time in leisure activities and with family. "Stress can trigger the body to release hormones and other substances that over time can damage immune defenses and vital organs," the researchers said. "This 'toxic' and chronic stress can age people and lead to serious illness, including cardiovascular disease." Another study shows New York State residents to be the third most neurotic according to scientists who study 'geographic personalities.'

Natural medicine has many methods of offering safe and effective anxiety relief that can help New Yorkers avoid medications like Xanax and Paxil. Exercise has been shown to decrease stress levels and help mood, as well as many medications. Strategies such as increased water, whole foods, and meditation can change a person's physiology to lower stress hormones. Paying attention to the messages we tell ourselves can often be helpful to help change our response to the world.

Specific nutrients such as vitamin B6, niacinamide, tryptophan and theanine can work on the same mechanisms as the medications, but with a lower side effect profile. Passion flower, St. John's wort and Valerian have hundreds years of historical use to calm and center. As always, each person is unique, so certain remedies may work better for certain individuals.

money and healthWhat We Can Learn from the French

Health care reform - the topic of the day. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the US stands at 37th in terms of quality health care (between Slovenia and Costa Rica), even though we pay more than 2.5 times in health care per person (1). Properly used medications are the fourth leading cause of death (2).

Some kind of change is needed. Unfortunately, it looks like the major players involved in making the change (pharmaceutical companies, the American Medical Association, and the government) are unfortunately looking only to change some economics, as opposed to improving the quality of care. As a result, drugs are still the focus, and prices are getting raised now, in anticipation of health change. This avarice may add more than $10 billion to the nation's drug bill, which is on track to exceed $300 billion this year (3).

Usually, when you want to learn to do something well, it is always a good idea to look to who is doing it best. Well, according to the WHO (not the rock band), France leads the world in quality of health care. Likely, their system of integrative care (using natural and complementary medicines along with conventional diagnostics) seems to be a good model.

Our hope is that we can get out there and tell our government legislators to learn from those who are doing it the best, instead of simply catering to those with investment in the status quo.
