Grapefruit
Curbs
Hepatitis C
Preliminary lab tests show that naringenin, a compound found in
grapefruit and other citrus fruits, may curb the spread of the
hepatitis C virus by 80%. The researchers suspected that the
hepatitis C virus 'hitched a ride' on bad cholesterol. Grapefruit is
known to lower bad cholesterol and triglycerides. It seems by
lowering cholesterol, it also lowered the hepatitis C virus as well.
Since grapefruit can change absorption of medications, it is
important to check with your prescribing doctor if you are taking
medications.

What Wrong with this Picture?

Dr. Peter took this picture while walking on 7th avenue
south down to his office from Penn Station. Basically, we are looking
at fish oil supplements (with dubious certification regarding
molecular distillation and removal of metals and toxins) sitting in
the hot sun in plastic bottles in front of a popular chain vitamin
store. Our sense is that $12.99 is indeed a hot deal, but not
so hot for your health regarding possible:
- phthalate and BPA contamination from hot plastic
- spoiled fish oil from excess long term heat
- possible toxin contamination from mass-marketed poor quality
control products
yikes!

The Fight for Natural Medicine Continues....
|

 Naturopathic
Licensing.... Where We Are Now
We want to thank all of you for writing, calling and creating
dialogues with your NY legislators regarding the licensing of
naturopathic doctors... the response was very strong. Patients from
all of over New York peacefully bombarded their legislators in
person, by phone, by fax and by email letting them know that medicine
should not be a monopoly in the state of New York.
A few patients went all out and initiated spirited full
dialogues with their legislators - thank you so much for your time
and efforts on all our behalf. You inspire us.
Despite having a majority of supporters on the committee, the
Naturopathic licensing bill was held for further consideration on the
recommendation of the committee chairwoman Deborah Glick. As a
result, bills S1930 and A1370 were
unfortunately held without a vote. It seems even though we have
answered all her questions and addressed all concerns, she is still
bowing to the medical society who is simply blocking the bill from
moving forward.
What we can still do:
1 -call (518-455-4841) or write to Deborah
Glick and to tell her the reasons she is holding the
bill have been addressed, and that you believe she is simply afraid
of the powerful medical lobby. If she moves it forward, her committee
will follow.
2 - thank the legislators who tried to break the hold in the
committee. They are bold and visionary, and apparently not afraid:

Staten Island (518-455-5526) personally called dr. peter to let
us know how the vote went. He supports and sponsors the bill, but
voted to hold it in deference to chairwoman Glick. Let Mr. Cusick
know you appreciate his earnest concern.
We are SO profoundly appreciative your help.
Our patients are the pioneers who are keeping this hope alive
to change health care in New York state. We know we keep asking
- but it will take repeated attempts to break the monopoly hold on
medicine in New York State. We will not stop until every person in NY
has the opportunity to see a licensed naturopathic doctor.

Recipe: Leftover Juicing Fiber Makes a Great Muffin
|

Dr. Peter's Fiber Muffins
|

(about 8 muffins)
Ingredients:
1 cup of flour of your choice: sorghum, buckwheat, spelt flour,
wheat, etc...
2 cups of fiber from whatever greens and fruit you juiced that day
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 cup walnut oil
1/2 to 1 cup of maple syrup (grade B)
1 egg beaten or 1 tablespoon of applesauce
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
2 tablespoons of flaxseeds
1/2 to 1 cup raisins
Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees (convection if you have it).
Mix all ingredients in a bowl and add to muffin pan. Bake for 35
minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
Commentary:
One day, dr. Peter decided he did not want to throw away the fiber
from whatever vegetables and fruits he juiced that morning. So he
started playing around with muffin recipes and this is where it
evolved to.
dr. Pina continually makes fun of these muffins (for sometimes there
is parsely or some odd green sticking out the top) - but Sophia likes
'em.
