SIDE NOTES

Hi Glycemic Refined Sugars and Breads are linked to breast cancer. In a study of 61,433 over 17 years, found increases in estrogen receptor (ER) positive and progesterone receptor (PR) negative cancers.Women in the highest category of "glycemic load" had an 81% increased risk of ER+/PR- tumors, and those with the highest carbohydrate intake had a 34% increased risk, compared to those in the lowest groups. It is likely that food associated increases in the hormone insulin as well as female reproductive hormones are driving this significant increase. reference: Int J Cancer. 2009 Jul 1;125(1):153-7

Chronic Kidney Disease Helped with Baking Soda?

Daily supplementation with common sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) slows the progression rate of renal failure to end-stage renal disease and improves nutritional status among patients with chronic kidney disease. Patients using the baking soda had lowered need for drugs and felt better using a simple compound for

Food Not Shown to Have Enough

Seventy diets were analyzed (athletes to sedentary subjects). All of these dietary analyses fell short of the recommended 100% RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) micronutrient level from food alone. Therefore, based on diets analyzed for adequacy or inadequacy of macronutrients and micronutrients, it is possible that food selection alone does not provide 100% of the RDA. This may be due to poor quality soil, the ability of chemicals to leach nutrients from food and/or lack of fresh produce and food sources. reference: J Int Soc Sports Nutr. 2006; 3(1): 51-55.

There are photoreceptors at the back of your knees? Scientists studying these learned that exposing the area behind the knee (called the popliteal area) may actually affect the 24 hour rhythm cycle of our body. These tests have been debated, and more study needs to be done.

WHY EAT YOUR BROCCOLI?

Cruciferous Vegetables as Cancer Prevention
June 24, 2009 - dr. pina and dr. peter

Consumption of cruciferous (also known as Brassica vegetables) of 4.5 servings a month help protect smokers against lung cancer. Cruciferous vegetables include broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, kale, cabbage, and bok choy. In the United States, an estimated 26.2 million men (23.5 percent) and 20.9 million women (18.1 percent) are smokers. These people are at higher risk of heart attack and stroke. Cigarette smoking is the number one cause of smoking lung cancer. And overall, at least 4.5 million American teens are addicted users of cigarettes.

Findings were presented at the Seventh Annual American Association for Cancer Research International Conference on Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research, in November 2008 which shown that the risk of developing lung cancer was reduced by 22% to 50% among smokers who consumed at least 4.5 servings of raw cruciferous vegetables a month, compared with those who consumed less than 2.5 servings per month. An intake of fruits and total vegetables showed an even stronger association among never smokers, whereas significant inverse associations with cruciferous vegetable consumption were only observed among smokers and former smokers.

Previous research also demonstrated that the intake of raw cruciferous vegetables, including broccoli, broccoli sprouts, cabbage, and cauliflower, was associated with a reduced risk for bladder cancer. There are many healthful components to cruciferous vegetables. Indole 3-carbinols have been shown to be cancer protective, and intake of soluble and insoluble fiber may also have benefit. Cruciferous vegetables are also unique in that they are rich sources of sulfur-containing compounds known as glucosinolates. The name comes from their four-petaled flowers, which look like a crucifer, or cross.

Of course, the best protection is to avoid smoking completely. For those working on the process, the addition of cruciferous vegetable may add an important protection. Although not studied, it is likely these vegetables may also protect those exposed to second hand smoke as well.

Open House - Fun Day

May 6th was the official grand-opening for InnerSource Health in Long Island. All told, about 50 friends, family and patients came in from all areas of Long Island, and a few from NY City and New Jersey too. Patients we had not seen in a while came by to share their health stories. And the healthy snackies were delicious. Best of all, there was no 'new carpet and paint smell' with the ecological versions we used. Thank you to everyone for showing your love and support of natural medicine in Huntington.

Dr. Peter meets with Senator Schumer and an Assemblyman Hoyt

As Vice-President of the New York Association of Naturopathic Physicians, Dr. Peter Bongiorno met with U.S. Senator Charles Schumer (in middle with Dr. Peter left, and Dr. Serena Ma, NYANP representative, right)  in a visit with New York Assemblyman Sam Hoyt in which he discussed licensing of naturopathic medicine in the state of New York. Assemblyman Hoyt of Buffalo (see bottom left picture) is a strong supporter of naturopathic medicine, and has been a leader in the fight to get naturopathic medicine licensed in New York State. Although 16 states are currently licensed (including Connecticut, since 1922), the medical society in the state of New York has a powerful, influential, and conservative lobby, and opposes naturopathic doctors from practicing to the full scope of their training.  It will take all of us to talk to our legislators to overcome this opposition. Despite the opposition bills have gone very far due to the public's desire for natural medicine, and right now about 80 legislators support our bill. To help support naturopathic medicine please click on the NYANP link below or call our office for more details.  Now is the time to change the course of our healthcare in New York, or it will be chosen for you (see quote at bottom of newsletter).

Recipe: Sweet Basil and Ginger Tea

from the upcoming book from dear friend and master health gourmet Kristin O'Connor. To learn more about Kristin and about more healthy cooking, please visit: NourishThis!

Ingredients ( for 2 servings):

·  10 leaves fresh basil

·  2 TBS fresh ginger root, slices (~1")

·  1 tsp. Honey (local if possible)

·  2 TBS fresh lemon juice

·  4 cup cups of water

How To Prepare:
Slice the fresh ginger root into thin pieces. Wash basil gently under cold water and pat dry with a clean dish towel. In a tea pot (or small sauce pan), add water, sliced ginger and basil leaves. Bring to a boil and reduce to a simmer. Let simmer 2-3 minutes, the water should turn a light-golden hue. Strain tea into two large mugs (leaving behind the ginger and basil). Stir in 1 TBS of lemon juice and 1/2 tsp. of honey into each mug. Serve warm.

Comment: Ginger is probably the most effective of all the herbs to calm and heal the digestive system. It is excellent for nausea, gastroenteritis (stomach viruses), and to help enhance poor function. Originally hailing from the Mediterranean and Middle East, basil is known for its help with indigestion, constipation, and for diabetes balance. This is a perfect tea to keep a healthy digestive tract feeling good, or to support one that needs some healing.
