RESEARCH

GOOD SLEEP HELPS GOOD EATS: Researchers at Harvard studied
542 males (average age 49 years), and found that adequate sleep were
significantly associated with at least 2 of the 3 healthful eating
choices assessed. reference: Am J Public Health 2009 99:
S636-S643

WHEAT ALLERGY and MISCARRIAGE: An Italian study of 44 patients
with miscarriage history, 39 patients with fetal growth problems, and
50 normal subjects has shown that patients with recurrent spontaneous
abortion and those with intrauterine fetal growth retardation had a
significantly higher frequency of serological markers of celiac
disease than controls. The study's authors also explains that even
though only 1 in 1000 people in Europe have some symptomatic
gluten-sensitivity, it is now becoming clear that a greater
proportion of individuals have a clinically silent form of the
disease, and probably many others have a minor form of enteropathy
(digestive inflammation and disease).

Vitamin
B6 for Pregnancy
Vitamin B6 was first used to help nausea during
pregnancy way back in 1942. With a category A rating (no risk
known), it seems to be a safe way to work with difficulty nausea
while pregnant. It has been studied in a number of randomized
controlled trials for this purpose. Although we do not know the exact
mechanism of action, it is known to lower severity of the nausea,
although it does not seem to necessarily decrease the vomiting
frequency in every study. In my patients with severe nausea, I have
found a combination of diet changes, acupressure or acupuncture and
ginger to be very helpful in most cases. Vitamin B6 may be another
tool to help with this sometimes difficult and uncomfortable
condition of pregnancy.

Bluberry Breakfast Pancakes
|
|
from: www.NourishThis.com
Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups
buckwheat flour
1 tsp.
Baking powder
1 tsp.
Xantham gum
1 tsp. Salt
1/4 cup
maple syrup
1/4 cup
apple sauce
1 TBS
coconut oil
3/4 cup
blueberries
Vegetable
Spray
How To: Use a fork to combine dry
ingredients in a medium mixing bowl. In a small bowl, whisk
together maple syrup, applesauce and oil. Add wet ingredients
to dry, stirring only until combined. Add in blueberries gently
stir to combine, being cautious not to crush the berries. Heat
your skillet on medium and coat with vegetable oil spray. Using
an ice cream scoop (usually about the measure of 1/4 to 1/3 cup),
spoon batter onto your skillet. Buckwheat pancakes are
generally fairly thin and take less time to cook than other pancakes
so watch your skillet carefully. Flip when you see bubbles on
the surface of the batter, usually cooking 1-2 minutes per side.
Serve warm.
Health
Commentary:
Buckwheat is a healthy grain which
is high in dietary fiber, manganese and tryptophan (an amino acid
that helps mood). Buckwheat does not contain gluten, and is a good
substitute for wheat, barley, rye and oats for people with gluten
sensitivity, celiac, and other inflammatory bowel diseases.
Blueberries are an excellent source of phytonutrients, quercetin and
anti-oxidants. Maple syrup contains zinc and manganese, both good for
immune system support.
