Hibiscus Tea Increases Good Cholesterol in Diabetics
Used in many parts of the world Hibiscus contains many helpful
phytochemicals.
Traditionally, it has been used for blood pressure, liver diseases,
loss of appetite, circulation, and as a gentle laxative and
diuretic.
A recent study of 53 patients with diabetes were
studied in a randomized controlled clinical trial and assigned into
two groups: Hibiscus or black tea twice daily for 1 month. Fasting
blood samples were obtained before and after intervention, testing
HDL, LDL, triglycerides, Apo-A1, Apo-B1-00, and Lp(a).
Hibiscus consumption reduced most of the lipids and lipoproteins
studied and increased HDL (16.7%) percent, while black tea consumption
only increased HDL (13%) and did not alter the other profiles.

Breast Feeding Protects Mom from
Disease
Breast feeding is well known to increase health of the newborn in
terms of immunity, allergies, digestive issues, skin problems, mood
and much more.
According to the December 2009 issue of the medical journal Diabetes
of 1399 women, breast feeding is also a boost to Mom's health too by
lowering risk of metabolic syndrome, which strongly predicts future
diabetes, heart disease and early death for women.
"The findings indicate that breastfeeding a child may have
lasting favorable effects on a woman's risk factors for later
developing diabetes or heart disease," said Dr. Gunderson, an
author of the study. reference: Diabetes. Published online December 3, 2009

Diabetes: Natural Medicine Works
by Peter Bongiorno ND, LAc and Pina LoGiudice ND
LAc
One in 8
New Yorkers have diabetes and 25% do not know it. Many more have
'pre-diabetes' or hypoglycemia, both of which can lead to diabetes
later in life. Some diabetes drugs like Avandia have been shown to
cause heart attacks, and will likely be removed from the market.
Fortunately, naturopathic medicine has a very effective array of
lifestyle and nutrient recommendations to prevent this condition, and
help bring blood sugar back to normal if you already have it: Exercise
is a key to improve insulin sensitivity, which helps sugar move into
the cells and out of the blood, where it can cause damage to blood
vessels, the kidneys and the eyes. Low glycemic load foods are
wonderful to keep blood sugar from spiking. Vegetables, legumes and
organic lean meats can tastefully help keep blood sugar under
control. Nutrients such as chromium and magnesium are
typically low in patients with diabetes, and supplementation will
help. Herbs such as gymnema, bitter melon, can also help as
well as drugs. Hibiscus tea can also positively alter lipid
status (see research section of this newsletter). Finally, special fibers
like glucomannan will keep extra sugars from being absorbed, and keep
digestive movement healthful.
Type I diabetes is most often diagnosed in children. Many of the same
approaches given above apply, as well as adding certain nutrients
like biotin which are known to increase beta-cell function in newly
diagnosed youngsters. Teaching parents about glycemic load and
cultivating healthy tastes for food and exercise early is also a key.
Blood tests can also help make better natural medicine choices.
Typically, it is important to run fasting blood sugars at specific
times throughout the day to learn an individual's sugar level
tendencies. This way, specific recommendations for food and physical
activity can achieve best results. Other blood tests should include
hemoglobin A1C, which checks blood sugar over a 3 month period. Also,
fructosamine, glucose tolerance tests, and C-peptide are other tests
that can tell us more about how the body handles sugar, and how to
best support that person. All these
can help make better decisions about which natural foods, nutrients
and herbs will work best in each patient's particular case.
Dr. Peter Bongiorno will teach you what you need to know by giving a
lecture about the best naturopathic approaches blood sugar and
diabetes on Monday, March 8th at the Natural Gourmet
Institute on 21st Street (Chelsea area) in New York City.

Apricot Glazed Salmon (4 servings)
|
|
from: www.NourishThis.com
Ingredients:
2 lbs. salmon
1/4 cup whole fruit apricot jam
1 TBS water
2 TBS dried ginger
1/4 tsp nutmeg, freshly ground
sea salt
fresh cracked pepper
1 tsp. matcha (powdered green tea) *optional
How To Prepare
Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. In a small saucepan, melt together the
apricot jam and water over medium heat. Stir in ginger and nutmeg.
Pat dry the salmon and place on a parchment covered baking sheet.
Season the salmon with sea salt and black pepper and sprinkle with
the matcha (try to distribute as evenly as possible). Remove the
apricot mixture from the heat and let cool 3-4 minutes. Using a
spoon, distribute the glaze over the salmon and spread evenly with an
offset spatula (reserve ~1 TBS of glaze in the saucepan). Bake at 350
degrees for 15 minutes.
*For your complex carb, serve with brown rice. Use the saucepan used
for the glaze to make the rice so that the reserved tablespoon of
apricot glaze will subtly flavor the brown rice (top rice with fresh
parsley).
Naturopathic Thoughts:
Salmon is a cold-water fish well researched for its heart-healthy and
brain protective omega-3 fatty acids. A wonderful protein source,
salmon also supplies vitamin D, selenium and B vitamins. Ginger is a
digestive healer known to eliminate nausea and fight colds and flu.
Matcha is a powdered green tea with high epigallocatechin content
sought after for its cancer fighting properties. Nutmeg pairs nicely
with ginger to calm digestive gas and bloating, stop diarrhea and
protect the liver.
