RESEARCH

Green Tea Helps Thalassemic Mice Detox Iron
Known to be protective for many cancers,
including breast, stomach and colon cancer, researchers studied green
tea's ability to possibly help patients with Thalassemia.
Thalassemia is a condition that requires frequent blood transfusions,
and creates a situation of iron build up as a result. It was found
that mice given green tea had lower levels of iron overload.
From this, it is likely that green tea may be useful to help other
metal overloads and could be a powerful ally in detoxification
regimens.

GM CORN:
TOXIC TO A FEW BODY SYSTEMS
Corn is a staple in many foods.
Unfortunately, most of us eat genetically modified versions of corn.
Often, genetically altered versions are used to enhance growth and to
allow use of pesticides not used on conventionally grown crops.
One 90 day study on rats has shown that these Monsanto created foods
may indeed produce toxic effects mostly on the liver and the
kidneys, the major detox organs. But effects will also seen
on the heart, adrenal glands, spleen and blood system. The author believed the toxicity was due either to the
GM food themselves causing DNA changes in the tissues, or the
pesticides that came with them causing toxic effects. The authors
were surprised to see such changes in only three months and strongly
recommended further studies.

DETOX for FERTILITY
|
|
by dr. pina
loGiudice
In our growing toxic world, I always stress to my patients the
importance to detoxify your body prior to trying to conceive.
For over the past 50 years, society has pumped into the environment
more pollutants and chemicals than ever before imagined. And
unfortunately, researchers are only now unearthing the insidious
effects of these chemicals on our bodies. We are learning that today,
sperm counts have decreased and women in childbearing years are
having more trouble conceiving by more than 42%. Once born, infant birth
weights are lower, and life begins with detectable amounts
of organic pollutantssuch as PCBs and DDT already in the
system This emerging research is even discussing the effects of
pre-conceptive maternal health on actually staving off chronic
disease in their offspring.
With this information, it makes prudent sense to create a
personalized detox plan starting a month prior to trying to conceive.
During this time, it is imperative to maintain a clean, whole
foods based diet, use various exercise and hydrotherapeutics to
increase elimination through the skin and create a pregnancy plan
that will minimize the exposure to environmental toxins.

As a naturopathic doctors living,
eating, respiring, and practicing in New York City - we see on a
daily basis the burden of toxic load on the health of many of our
patients. More research is amassing showing correlations between
toxic exposure with cardiovascular, autoimmune, cancers, neurologic
and psychiatric disease. As an emerging field with relative dearth of
information available to help clearly diagnose and specifically treat
environmentally-induced disease, it is a challenge to work with
conditions caused by possible toxicity. Our aim in this article is to
help increase awareness of environmental toxicities and review
options for treatment. This article will examine typical exposures we
all face, and give an overall review how to lower exposure and appropriately
detoxify the individual patient so that his or her body can resume
healthy processes to heal. Also, it is important to note that not all
cases should be treated by detoxification - many times, gentle
nourishing treatments will best serve the individual to allow
detoxification and healing.

DETOX FOODS: FIBER, PROTEIN, CILANTRO, PARSLEY

Oftentimes, when working to help a patient clean out, it is important
to focus on foods that help clean specific body systems. There are a
number of foods that are useful, and we focus on four main ones in
this article.
Fiberis a key for proper elimination of toxins. The liver
dumps its contents (extra cholesterol, hormone metabolites, toxins)
into the common bile duct which eventually leads to the intestines to
get pooped out - is 'poop' a medical term? Anyway, without a
proper balance and amount of both soluble and insoluble fibers, the
liver will not be able to clear substances, and these may return to
the blood stream and actually make a person feel worse. Regular bowel
movements are very important, and should be assured before starting
any detoxification program.
Protein is a key to help the liver through its detoxification
phases. Known as Phase I and Phase II detoxification, the liver may
get stuck at the end of phase one and actually create more toxic
metabolites that the kidney will not be able to get rid of when there
is not enough protein. So any detox should assure adequate protein
levels using a highly absorbable protein.

parsley
|
Speaking of the kidneys, parsley is a wonderful diuretic herb.
It helps the body shed extra fluid, and is known to help the kidneys
process and the urinary tract empty its nitrogen containing wastes.
Water intake is of course a key too, and should be maintained.
Finally, cilantro is an herb used in Indian cooking. It is
known for its ability to get rid of metals and has been shown in some
studies to do
just that. It may be useful in patients suspected to have higher than
normal exposure to mercury, lead or aluminum.
