Dr. Bongiorno graduated with a doctorate in naturopathic medicine (class valedictorian) and a masters in acupuncture from Bastyr University. Before medical school, he researched at Yale University and then as a pre-doctoral fellow at the branch of Clinical Neuro-Endocrinology in the National Institute of Mental Health, at the National Institutes of Health. As a researcher, he co-authored numerous papers in scientific journals such as Nature Medicine, Molecular Psychiatry and Endocrinology.
Dr. Bongiorno is a major contributor to the 3rd edition of the Textbook of Natural Medicine (Elsevier/Churchill Livingstone), he completed the Complementary and Alternative Medicine chapter in the text The Biology of Depression (Wiley) and has recently authored the textbook Healing Depression: Naturopathic and Integrative Therapies (CCNM Press).
Dr. Bongiorno has lectured at Mount Sinai School of Medicine about natural medicine and acupuncture in their Arts and Sciences of Medicine program, as adjunct faculty at University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey for their Summer Semester at the Institute for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, as well as gives lectures for continuing education at New York University, and is on faculty at the Natural Gourmet Institute School.
He was a featured speaker on the subject of depression at the August 2010 American Association of Naturopathic Physicians Conference in Portland Oregon. He has lectured at the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians conference (2007) and Integrative Health Symposium (formerly CAM Expo) in New York City (2007).
Dr. Bongiorno has been interviewed on national television (the Hallmark Channel) and local television (News12 Long Island), radio (on the air with Dr. Fratellone, 1600AM), and national media (MSN.com, Energy Times). Dr. Bongiorno is current Vice-President of the New York Association of Naturopathic Physicians, is a member of the American Association for Naturopathic Physicians, and Physicians for Social Responsibility.
